Investigating Mazon Creek fossil plants using computed tomography and microphotography

More than 20,000 siderite concretions from the Mazon Creek area of northern Illinois, United States are housed in paleobotanical collections Field Museum. A large proportion contain fossil plants Middle Pennsylvanian age that often have excellent three-dimensional morphology and sometimes anatomical detail. Approximately eighty plant taxa been recognized Lagerstätte, but few studied detail, some cases systematic affinities these fossils need reevaluation. The (3D) preservation makes them ideal candidates for study using x-ray micro-computed tomography (μCT), here we apply techniques to more accurately reconstruct specimens Tetraphyllostrobus Gao et Zodrow Crossotheca Zeiller. mineralogical composition was elemental maps Raman spectroscopy. In-situ spores were with differential interference contrast, Airyscan confocal super-resolution microscopy, scanning electron which reveal different features degrees clarity. Our analyses show μCT can provide detail on structure fossils, nature associated mineralization enhancing obscuring critical information. Results guidance selecting prioritizing preserved future research.
